Q & A

All-time favorite song?

02.04.19

"Bohemian Rhapsody" by Queen.

How do you describe your music to people?

02.04.19

Open format. I really don't hold back from playing any genre. If I feel that the crowd will love it, then I will play it!

Tell us about how you first started gigging.

02.04.19

My first gig was at my brother's graduation party. After that, it was just word-of-mouth and playing at a bunch of random house parties.

Tell us about your best gig in Sac.

02.04.19

It would have to be at an underground rave in Sacramento. It was so good and so unexpected.

Tell us about your worst gig.

02.04.19

This one time I played a concert in Yuba City, and everyone was mad at the performer because he showed up late then decided to take off after one song. The whole audience then started throwing drinks and garbage at the stage and basically destroyed most of the equipment on the stage. Luckily, I moved my stuff out of the way fast enough.

What artist or band are you a little embarrassed to love, and why?

02.04.19

Justin Timberlake. Im only embarrassed because everyone laughs when I say it. He's the G.O.A.T.

What was the first song you learned to play?

02.04.19

Well, at first I started mixing mainly electronic dance music by Darude and Benny Benassi because that was all I could find on LimeWire.

What's next for you?

02.04.19

I really don't know at this point. I would like to start traveling and playing in different parts of the country, or even the world!

What's the story behind your stage name?

02.04.19

When I first started playing, I was asked by a band what my name was, so they could introduce me. It was really loud inside the venue, and I told him my name was DJ Jose, and he misunderstood me and introduced me as DJ Zay, and to me that sounded pretty cool, so I stuck with that name instead.

What's your favorite local artist/group?

02.04.19

DJ Markz.

Who are your biggest influences?

02.04.19

DJ AM, DJ Jazzy Jeff, Deorro, Metallica.

Who first inspired you to play music?

02.04.19

I was inspired to DJ by the late DJ AM. Before I started DJing, I was a drummer, and at the time, Travis Barker was playing along to DJ AM, and he really got me interested in the art of turntablism.

Words to live by?

02.04.19

Find something you love doing so much, you would do it for free. Then find someone to pay you for it.
