Q & A

All-time favorite song?

02.04.19

"Valerie" by Amy Winehouse. It reminds me of my mentor Sean Barris.

How do you describe your music to people?

02.04.19

Modern boom-bap with EDM flare.

Tell us about how you first started gigging.

02.04.19

I started doing shows under my emcee name after taking a break from performing for about four years. I was a drummer/singer in a prog rock band in 2009.

Tell us about your best gig in Sac.

02.04.19

The best show I have had in Sacramento was when my band (#Trending) and I opened for Shwayze on December 18th at Holy Diver. It was a blended set with JJ the Messiah. The crowd was unreal and they showed so much love and support!

Tell us about your worst gig.

02.04.19

The worst gig I ever played was also at Holy Diver, when I was too buzzed to remember my lyrics halfway through my verses. I was a little stoned, too. Needless to say, I don't party before shows anymore.

What artist or band are you a little embarrassed to love, and why?

02.04.19

I would say Regina Spektor and Hellogoodbye. Just all the right types of good to my ears.

What was the first song you learned to play?

02.04.19

I have played the drums since I was 9, and I started in church. When I started playing music I enjoyed outside of Wednesdays, the first song I takled was "Seven Nation Army" by The White Stripes.

What's next for you?

02.04.19

I am promoting and touring the project #Trending has just finished called The Recommended EP. We also have booked a performance for Pride in Portland. Promoting the new single I featured on produced by Czechmate called "Talk Sh*t." I am finishing an EP with the neo-funk hip-hop group Busta. Also finishing up a project with ConCow that is going to be a Modern boom-bap/hip-hop head's dream!

What's the story behind your stage name?

02.04.19

My name Kassette came to me because when I was a kid, I was a big fan of making faux radio shows on a boom box I bought using money I earned doing yard work for the summer. I would record the songs from CDs or the radio to cassette tapes, and in between the songs "host" a radio show. I would burn through cassettes. :)

What's your favorite local artist/group?

02.04.19

Definitely Basi Vibe, Czechmate, JJ the Messiah and Shane Q.

Who are your biggest influences?

02.04.19

Anyone on Dr.Dre's The Chronic 2001. Gorillaz. Kid Cudi. Slug (Atmosphere). The-Dream.

Who first inspired you to play music?

02.04.19

VH1 and the made-for-tv bio films they would show like The Jacksons, The Temptations and a couple others I can't remember.

Words to live by?

02.04.19

Try the things you want, even if they scare you. They bring new perspectives. Perspective is everything.
