Tell us about how you first started gigging.

In 2015, I sat down with a local entrepreneur who advised me to start getting into the Sac music scene, not only to get my name out there but for people to start listening to my music. That inspired me to go to various open-mics around Sacramento. I found myself going two to three times per week. I started networking at my shows, selling albums and merch, and getting my name to buzz around Sacramento. I won a rap battle at Blue Lamp in 2015 and opened for Joell Ortiz at Harlow's. I was offered a set on First Fest, HOF Day, I got nominated for six Sammie awards and had the opportunity to perform at the awards show all in 2017.

What's the story behind your stage name?

My middle name is Kennedy and, in the past, the choices I've made have always been mediocre—never too hot, never too cold, always in the middle. My stage name "Wrose" is a testament of how I rose up from being in the middle and making sure my "yes" is a solid "yes" and my "no" is a no. I threw a "W" in front of Wrose because there's a country band that already uses the name Kennedy Rose.
