Q & A

All-time favorite song?

02.08.19

Kevin: "Charlie Brown" by Coldplay always gets me going.

Alyssa: "Yet" by Switchfoot

How do you describe your music to people?

02.08.19

Different, layered, textured and atmospheric.

Tell us about how the band formed.

02.08.19

Kevin: It was a culmination of things. I had played in and for a number of bands for the past 10 years in Sacramento. It always seemed like for one reason or another things wouldn't work out, or things would stop progressing. So I thought to myself, "What's one way to start something that's a bit more solid?" My wife had some experience with music and photography and we'd talked about the idea of playing music together before. So, it was time.

Tell us about your best gig in Sac.

02.08.19

We've only played in Sacramento twice. Our EP release show was best in terms of venue hospitality and communication (Thanks Daniel and Romandia of Momos/Harlows!).

Tell us about your worst gig.

02.08.19

In terms of working out the kinks, our EP release show was probably our worst. But hey, it was our first show together and Alyssa's first show EVER.

What artist or band are you a little embarrassed to love, and why?

02.08.19

Kevin: I'm not really embarrassed about any of the bands/artists I'm into.

Alyssa: I was a BIG Switchfoot fangirl growing up and Kevin often teases me about this.

What was the first song you learned to play?

02.08.19

Kevin: I was in band in Elementary school, but let's rule that out because of the uncool factor. It was probably "Seven Nation Army" by The White Stripes.

Alyssa: Since we're doing cool songs, the first cool song I taught myself was "Clocks" by Coldplay on the piano.

What's next for the band?

02.08.19

We have a mini-tour up through the Pacific Northwest starting February 28. We are also releasing our new single "Futures" on February 28. We're always working with a "third" member who is taking on multiple behind-the-scenes roles for us. (Thanks Tyler!)

What's the story behind the band name?

02.08.19

Kevin is Romanian and Topograf in Romanian means surveyor. We live in a van full-time and work in the Bay Area. A lot of what we have done in this first year as Topograf has been unconventional and in some ways risky. So in a sense, we are surveying and exploring our futures a bit.

What's your favorite local artist/group?

02.08.19

Makebelief, Fate Under Fire, Petaluma, Doombird and Honyock.

Who are your biggest influences?

02.08.19

We both like a lot of the more underground, emerging artists. Some bigger ones are: Coldplay, Bombay Bicycle Club, Mutemath. Some smaller ones are: Nick Leng, Bayonne, Flor.

Who first inspired you to play music?

02.08.19

Kevin: I don't know if anyone personally inspired me to play music. I was always engrossed with music, bands and performing growing up and knew to some extent that music would be a part of my future.

Alyssa: I was in band at Chico High and never really continued after that. Kevin actually inspired me to give music a go.

Words to live by?

02.08.19

Kevin: The truth is almost always somewhere in the middle.

Alyssa: A dream doesn't become reality by chance. It takes focus, persistence and hard work.
