Q & A

As a child growing up, music surrounds us. What type of music did you hear the most back then? How does it differ from what you listen to now?

02.06.20

I discovered The Offspring when I was 10 and I still haven’t stopped obsessing over punk rock. My love has gotten deeper, wider and more varied. But it stays true to my roots.

Do you have regular gigs around town?

02.06.20

Yeah! We love playing shows and jump on every opportunity.

Favorite guitar player?

02.06.20

Blake Schwarzenbach for sure. A huge inspiration for being the guitarist and vocalist in a three-piece.

How did it first start?

02.06.20

A friend left a guitar at my house when I was 17. I Googled a chord chart, learned three chords, and yelled about my parents. Hasn’t changed much since then!

How do you describe your music to people?

02.06.20

Emotionally-charged acoustic punk! Or I just say it’s me going “WAAAAAAAHHHH!”

Is there a central theme to your band's music?

02.06.20

Sort of. It’s mainly about releasing all of my negative pent up emotions in a positive and healthy way. So the themes are about whatever is weighing on me. Usually my childhood.

Name a pet peeve.

02.06.20

No I won’t name any pet “peeve” what a weird name for a pet.

Tell us about this creative project. What is it?

02.06.20

Jib and the Swigs is the first project in my life where I have total creative control. I’ve had these songs in my head for years and I’m so lucky to have wonderful friends who are talented musicians to help me.

Tell us about your best gig in Sac.

02.06.20

Bart’s Fest. Hands down. The two day festival at Bart’s House had all of my friends in one place supporting me. Singing along, dancing, enjoying themselves. It’s everything I want in my life and from performing. I’m starting to tear up just typing this.

Tell us about yourself.

02.06.20

I’m passionate and excited. I love humans and I love being surrounded by them.

What are your musical goals?

02.06.20

Keep going. Life is a lot, and there’s so many things I have to be responsible for. It’s easy for my passions to be pushed back. But the mission statement of this band is to make my art happen no matter what.

What do you sing in the shower? (Be honest.)

02.06.20

I sing slow and smooth versions of my songs! Trying my best to actually hit notes.

What drives you to keep playing even though the music industry can be so harsh?

02.06.20

I feel we can change the music industry. We can be the bands we want to hear, and we can book the shows we want to see. I feel the community that’s constantly working to make beauty happening is supremely inspiring and I want to be a part of that.

What message do you hope to give with your music?

02.06.20

You are deserving of catharsis and emotional honesty. You deserve to be loved and accepted, and it’s okay to not feel OK.

What's next for the band?

02.06.20

We’re working on an album to be released later this year. I’ve got a pretty ambitious concept for it, so I really hope I can make it happen in a timely manner.

What's the story behind the band name?

02.06.20

Oh boy. It’s kind of a silly name, I know. But I knew I wanted a “blank-and-the-blanks” format because I’m the constant of the band. The swigs comes from my love of coffee (I’m a barista at Shine Cafe), sparkling water, and yeah, beer.

What's your favorite jam from the '90s?

02.06.20

Everything Jawbreaker did.

What’s your favorite song to perform live right now?

02.06.20

“Hydra!” Such a blast to play. I love rolling around on the ground and getting ridiculous!

Where do you see yourself in ten years?

02.06.20

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAGGGGGHHHHHHH!!!

Who are your biggest influences?

02.06.20

Defiance Ohio, Jawbreaker, Streetlight Manifesto, Against Me!, Jawbreaker, Paul Baribeau, Jawbreaker and Violent Femmes.

Who first inspired you to play music?

02.06.20

My older brother Ricky! He’s so cool and talented and I love him wow what a guy.
